We were very sorry to hear about the death of Dolly Parton. She was a legend and an American icon… but not just in the obvious ways of most entertainers. Dolly's music stands on its own and would secure her legacy. But what really elevates her, in our minds, is her incredible commitment to public health and children's education.
Dolly established the Imagination Library, mailing free books to children in underserved communities to promote early literacy. She donated millions to education, disaster relief, and healthcare research. During the pandemic, she funded vaccine research and publicly received an early dose to encourage vaccine acceptance in her community.
I was pleasantly surprised to see tributes on social media that really put her work on important causes into perspective. It’s truly inspiring and should aspire us all to try to make our life’s work count.
