It can be very hard to find the time and money to get a new idea off the ground, especially if you’re trying to build something meant to make the world better, not just turn a profit.

Fellowships are one way to get paid while having the headspace to start something daring. A few weeks ago, my co-founder Mahima published a list of great fellowships for designers who want to work on problems like climate change and healthcare.

And earlier today, we noticed that the Mozilla Foundation has opened applications for its 2027–2028 fellows. The Mozilla fellowship is especially focused on:

  • Neurotech, biotech and physical AI

  • Hard infrastructure: compute, energy, quantum and the extremes

  • AI done right, and sovereign AI

  • Creative advocacy (one fellow)

That last one is especially weird and wonderful. Mozilla has reserved one independent fellowship spot for a culture jammer, prankster or artist-provocateur who can turn a stunt into a movement and make people rethink who technology is built for.
