Joining a charity’s board is an excellent way to use your design, product, and strategic skills for good. You’ll get to contribute meaningfully to a charity’s mission in your spare time and expose yourself to a whole new subject area. We think that joining a charity’s board is an excellent stepping-stone to working full-time on a hard problem.
We talked to people like former Netflix Design VP Rochelle King about their experiences on boards. Rochelle told us how she joined a human rights charity through a chance encounter in a “mom’s group” and how much she was able to contribute despite having little direct experience in that space.
We also heard a consistent theme from designers that they found board roles mostly through their social and professional networks, which just reinforces how important it is to foster those connections.
